Chip Seal Program

Chip sealing is a cost-effective way to extend the life of county roads. It helps keep roads in good condition and improves safety for drivers.  Chip sealing is used in Grays Harbor County for the following:

  • Extends pavement life by several years
  • Costs much less than full paving
  • Improves traction and seals cracks
  • Used on roads across the county

Step 1 - Prepare the Road: Clean surface, repair damage, and level uneven areas

Step 2 - Apply Asphalt: A thin layer of hot liquid asphalt is sprayed on the road

Step 3 - Add Rock (“Chips”): Small aggregate is spread and pressed into the surface

Step 4 - Compact and Set: Rollers press the material into place

Step 5 - Clean and Finish: Loose rock is swept away and striping is completed

Chip seal is a low-cost way to maintain roads, helping prevent cracks and water damage while improving traction and extending the time between major repairs. During work, expect reduced speeds (around 20 mph), loose gravel, and traffic control in active areas—these short-term impacts help improve roads long-term. Work typically takes place in summer, from late June through mid-August, and costs about $32,000 per mile compared to $250,000 or more for asphalt overlay. Driving slowly during this time helps protect your vehicle and keeps crews safe.
