Burn Rules & Outdoor Burning

Burn restrictions change throughout the year based on weather, fire risk, and air quality. Before starting any outdoor fire, always check current conditions and local rules.  Grays Harbor County works with local fire districts and state agencies to determine when burning is allowed. Restrictions may be lifted after periods of cooler, wetter weather, but safe burning practices are always required.

Safe Burning Practices

  • Never leave a fire unattended
  • Keep water or tools nearby to control the fire
  • Fully extinguish fires before leaving
  • Douse with water or soil and stir until everything is cool to the touch

Outdoor Burning may be allowed when fire danger is low, air quality conditions are acceptable, and when no county or state burn bans are in place.  Even when allowed, some activities (like large debris burning or land clearing) may still require permits.

Burn conditions can change quickly. Always confirm before burning:

Olympic Region Clean Air Agency (ORCAA) for permits and air quality guidance by the agency that enforces local, state and federal clean air laws.
